You are invited to participate in a research study investigating how we make judgements about people’s personality and behaviour based solely on their face. Participation is open to anybody aged 18 and over.

Participation should take no longer than 15 minutes and involves completing an online study where you will be asked to view a series of faces, and rate their apparent familiarity, distinctiveness or trustworthiness. We will then ask you to make a judgement about a second series of faces. You will also be asked to indicate your age, gender, and current country of residence.

There is no payment or reward for participating in this study.

The data collected will be presented in Ashleigh Warfield’s and/or Emily Alexander’s Research Dissertations, and may also be presented at academic conferences or published in peer-reviewed journals. The researchers named on this Information Statement, and other researchers who may join the research team in the future, may also re-analyse your data as part of future related or unrelated studies.

Your anonymity is assured as we are not collecting or recording any identifying information. Following completion of the study, all response data will be saved on password protected computers where it will be stored securely. Should the findings of the study be published, anonymous data (allowing the reported findings to be verified) may be placed in a public data repository, allowing other researchers to conduct their own analyses of it.  No individual participant will be identified in, or could be identified from, any published report or published dataset from this study.

Participation is entirely voluntary. Whether or not you decide to participate is your decision and will not disadvantage you. If you do decide to participate, you may withdraw yourself and your data from the project at any time prior to completing this study, without reason or consequence. Since participation is anonymous, you will not be able to withdraw your data after completing the study, as we will not be able to identify your specific dataset.

If you wish to ask any questions prior to participating, please feel free to contact either of the researchers named above.
